This Earth Day, let’s remember the chair of the first Earth Day rally on April 22, 1970: Tony Mazzocchi, president of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAW) – once called the “Rachel Carson of the American workplace.”

“For Mazzocchi, worker control over production was environmentalism. Their fates were intertwined. As he said in an Earth Day speech to the OCAW and broadcast on the Today show in 1970, the environmental movement needed the labor movement and vice versa.”
